As the fall and winter approach, the season’s main themes are everywhere to be seen on the catwalks, on the streets and on social media. One of the biggest trends is the comeback of classic fur and feathers. Full-length fur coats – plush, fluffy, in stark colors – are a highlight of many collections. Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Miu Miu, Prada and many more have flooded their shows with them. There is one for every occasion, all the way from Miu Miu’s petrol blue classic coat, worn garçonne-style with matching cap and trainers, to Balenciaga’s head-to-toe white gown, its vast snow-like expanse speckled with tiny black twigs. Going cold is just not going to be an option.
As a counterbalance to opulent fur, designers from Chanel to Paco Rabanne are bringing a metallic shine to everyday wear, with clean lines and cold, gold or silver tones. It is a major comeback from the Space Age fashion from the 1960s when designers would turn to the stars for inspiration. You can’t go unnoticed with all the shiny materials and accessories.
What this Fall/Winter season is not is understated. It’s all about making a loud statement – “more is more” is the order of the day. More fabric, more details, more patterns on bags, clothes, shoes. Moschino, Dolce & Gabbana and Etro, in particular, have produced some of the most “out there” collections.
If we have to name a colour that often comes back, excluding the classic black or white, is different shades of blue. Calm blue matches the season’s chill and makes up for the lack of colorful blossoms, creating a luminous atmosphere.
