One of my latest beauty item splurge was on a cushion compact by Chanel. After saving up for a while, I was able to get my hands on the product. Just to give a bit of background on why I decided to save up for this big purchase is that, I have never been a big fan of foundations. Living in country with pretty much a hot climate all year-round, I usually go for a very minimal makeup routine. For skin, I only apply concealer under my eyes and on the spots I want to hide and I simply finish it off with a setting powder. Yet there are days where I want to have a bit more coverage than usual (usually on special occasions), but I still don’t want to have a face full of foundation.
That’s when I decided to look into alternatives. I was looking at BB and CC creams but I found them not to be practical in terms of “on-the-go touchups.” So, cushion compacts were kind of the answer to my need. It also seems like this beauty item has become quite a makeup staple over the past few months.
I hesitated a lot between different ones as there are so many options out there nowadays. I looked at cushions from various brands but what convinced me to get the Chanel one was the glow and dewy skin finish look it gave. I also thought to myself that I might as well splurge on one item and enjoy it in the long term. The sales assistant also told me that the concept of this cushion is to be a “one-step skin product”. Meaning that there shouldn’t be any need to use concealer, foundation and finishing powder. The cushion itself sort of eliminates all of those steps and gives you a finishing look in one, single compact cushion. To add to that, the cushion also has SPF 15.
In terms of coverage, this cushion gives only a light coverage. Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean you can’t build up coverage. For people who have serious skin problems, this cushion might not be the one for you. But if you only need a light coverage and to even out your skin tone, then this might be an option. What I really like about it, is the texture of the product. You really feel like it not only corrects your skin but it also replenishes and hydrates it. Since the texture is mainly focus around moisture, I would definitely recommend this cushion for anyone who has a dry to slightly oily face texture. If you have very oily skin, the finish look might end up to be a bit too “glowy”.
The one I got is the number 10 – Beige . I’m very surprised at how the colour matches exactly my skin tone. In total, the brand offers only three shades of the cushion – which seems to be rather limited to me. Another thing to be pointed out is that the product is very long-lasting. When I apply it in the morning, I only need to touch up my face once during the day, usually around midday and that’s it.
If I had to sum it up, I would say that the pros of this compact cushion is practicality and hydration. We can’t deny that it does a great job at making your skin look fully revived and full of moisture.
However, what could be considered as its cons, is its price tag – which for some might find it relatively high. The fact that it also might not be suitable for oily skin types and that it still has a limited option of skin tones can be a turn off for potential buyers.
